Happy Thanksgiving | Give Thanks | Be Thankful

During the fall, and holiday season, it’s so easy to get caught up with tangible things…like presents you’ll get for others, presents you’ll receive, holiday party outfits, seasonal items you want. But do those things really matter? No. Not really. There is so much more than we should be thinking about, not only at this time of year, but all year.

I am thankful for…

A job to make a living…

Not everybody has that. While some don’t try, there are so many people looking for jobs, or second jobs, or even third jobs so that they can support themselves and their families. I can’t count the number of times I’ve thought how nice it’d be not to go to work, but I should be thankful that I have somewhere to go 5 days a week to make a paycheck. Not everybody has that.

Food in my stomach…

“There’s nothing to eatttttt…ughh”. I’ve literally said this so many times, and it’s sad when you think about that coming from somebodies mouth, when they have a kitchen full of food. I might not feel like eating it, but I have plenty of food. There are so many people starving every single day, and like seriously starving…not just being a hangry brat like me.

A roof over my head…

It might not be the biggest, or nicest, or have all of the amenities that I’d like, but it keeps me safe from the elements, it holds all of my material possessions, and there’s a kitchen in it where I can cook food. That should be enough. “In the U.S., more than 3.5 million people experience homelessness each year.” That statistic is insane. So sad, and should make every person think a little less critically about the stature of their current home.

Heat to keep me warm…

Even those who have homes, might not necessarily have the money to pay for heat. This is something to be seriously grateful, particularly if you live in the North. Same goes for those in the South with A/C. We take this for granted way too often, bitching and complaining about being too hot or too cold. Could you imagine if you had no control over that in your own home?

Clothing on my back…

The next time your feigning for a new designer bag at the mall, or another coat or sweater, think about how many people have been wearing the same dirty, tattered t-shirt for years? Forget the name brand, forget the status something might give you. The sheer fact that you have clean clothes to wear is  blessing. Some people can’t have that.

Family and friends…

People. We forget about people way too frequently! With focuses on things we forget the most important part of life…the people that you share it with. Without people, would our things ever matter? If you had nobody to share, and show and talk about things to, would those things ever mean anything to you? People create support systems for us, they give us the most intense feelings and emotions we could experience. Think about the people that you hold the most near and dear to your heart this holiday season. Remember why they mean so much to you.

What are you the most thankful for?

Happy Thanksgiving!

Love Always, Brook<3
